Here are a selection of free and commercial plugins and a short summary about what they can add to your WordPress website. We are continually updating this list when we come across new list-worthy plugins so stay tuned! We use and are affiliates for all of the commercial plugins listed here. The marketplace for commercial plugins is simply massive so we plan on only listing the best of the best.

Most WordPress users have their own favourite plugins, it really comes down to personal preference but we hope these give you an idea of what’s around and popular.

Free Plugins


Akismet is a plugin for preventing spammers from polluting your pages with spam comments. It is a free plugin and installed by default. The price varies depending on if you have a personal or commercial site, but if you intend on commenting being a feature on your site Akismet is a must. Caching Plugins (Super Cache and W3 Total Cache)

Caching plugins are WordPress performance plugins which optimises the performance of your WordPress website in a number of ways. There are a range of features and benefits including improved page load time, server performance and caching. They’re used by lots of large scale sites and can very easily be used with a Content Delivery Network (CDN) of your choice. The 2 main caching plugins are free, the most popular appears to be Super Cache. Jetpack gives you a bunch of cool features in one plugin such as sharing icons, stats, wp.me URL shortener and email subscriptions to name a few. For more information visit http://jetpack.me/.


WPtouch is a free mobile plugin which lets you easily set up a great mobile theme for visitors who access your WordPress website from the smartphone. WPtouch is able to detect the device that is accessing your website and if it’s a mobile or tablet then display the optimised theme with the option to switch back to the normal site. There is a also a pro version (see below) with dozens of more options if you’re serious about customising your users mobile experience. WordPress Backup to Dropbox

Whatever you do, always make sure you have backups! With this free plugin you select the day/time and your WordPress files and database will be copied to your Dropbox account. For more information visit: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-backup-to-dropbox/

Platinum SEO Pack

Website search engine optimisation (SEO) is becoming increasingly important if you want your website to be found. Platinum SEO Pack is a comprehensive plugin that includes all of your common SEO needs in a single plugin. Backup Buddy

Backup Buddy is an easy way to backup your WordPress website including all the database, widgets, themes and plugins you have installed. You can easily restore your site or reliably migrate to a new server if needed. There are alternatives, but Backup Buddy comes with a stack of options and is super slick. Gravity Forms

Gravity Forms are a super easy way for you to create your own customised form in minutes. You can select which type of fields you want to display, you can then edit the content and then easily embed them where you want on your WordPress site. Gravity Forms offers a visual form editor, multi page forms, order forms and conditional fields so that you can build the perfect form for your website. Gravity Forms also easily integrates with a huge number of 3rd party services which is very cool. We’re using Gravity Forms on this site (see the Contact Us page for a really simple example). PopUp Domination

PopUp Domination is perfect if you are trying to increase subscriptions on your website. The plugin enables you to can create eye catching popups which can be highly customised with whatever images or text you wish. You can even create different campaigns for different pages of your website. The other benefit of this plugin is that you can measure and optimise your campaigns by reviewing the analytics and testing which campaigns work best. Pretty Link Pro

If you’re pedantic about having control over your URL’s and links on your WordPress site, Pretty Link Pro is definitely worth a look. The Pretty Link Pro plugin is useful for link shortening, cloaking and redirection on your WordPress site and server. SeedProd is an easy way for you to show a “coming soon” page to your visitors while you work on your WordPress website behind the scenes. It also offers you “maintenance mode” if you need to take the website offline. The SeedProd plugin also gives your visitors the option to subscribe to your site while it’s under construction so you don’t lose valuable clientele. There are separate free plugins that offer these separate features, however I like having the options in one plugin that I can use on all my sites. WPtouch Pro

WPtouch Pro is a premium version of the free plugin WPtouch listed above with a 200+ extra features. If you’re serious about customising your mobile site, you need to take a look at WPtouch Pro, it gives you way more options than the free WPtouch plugin, in particular the ability to customise exactly what’s displayed. You can tell they’ve put a lot of work into this plugin, I will be sure to make a news post once I start playing around with all of the options.
